Microsoft Excel

What This Does

Excel Copilot can analyze your case filing data in plain English — answering questions like "How many civil cases were filed this month compared to last month?" without you needing to write a single formula. For the monthly statistical reports that court administrators require, this turns a 1–2 hour task into 15 minutes.

Before You Start

  • Excel is open with your case data exported from the CMS
  • Your Microsoft 365 plan includes Copilot (check with IT)
  • The data should have clear column headers (Case Type, Filing Date, Disposition, etc.)

Steps

1. Export case data from your CMS

  1. In Tyler Odyssey (or your CMS), navigate to the Reports section
  2. Run the case filing report for the current period — export to Excel or CSV
  3. Open the file in Excel — you should see rows of case data with columns for case type, filing date, case number, etc.

What you should see: A spreadsheet with case data rows and labeled column headers.

2. Open Copilot in Excel

  1. In the Home ribbon at the top, click the Copilot button (sparkle icon)
  2. The Copilot chat panel opens on the right side

3. Ask your first question

Type a plain-English question in the chat box:

  • "How many cases were filed by case type this month?"
  • "Show me the total filings for each month in this dataset"
  • "Compare this month's filings to last month by case type"

Copilot reads your data and produces an answer — sometimes as text, sometimes as a suggested chart.

What you should see: An answer summarizing your data, with optional charts or tables.

4. Ask for a formatted summary table

Type: "Create a summary table showing case type, count this month, count last month, and change."

Copilot creates the table and offers to insert it into the spreadsheet. Click Insert to add it.

5. Copy the summary into your report

  1. Select the summary table Copilot created
  2. Copy and paste it into your Word report template
  3. Add any narrative context above the table (Copilot can help with this too: "Write a 2-sentence summary of these case filing trends")

Real Example

Scenario: You need the monthly report for March 2026. Your CMS export has 847 rows of case data.

What you ask Copilot: "Summarize total filings by case type for March, and compare to February. Which case type had the biggest increase?"

What you get: "Civil filings: 312 (up 8% from February's 289). Criminal: 228 (down 3%). Family: 187 (up 12%). Traffic: 120 (stable). Family law had the biggest increase at 12%."

What you do next: Paste this summary into your monthly report — done in 5 minutes instead of an hour.

Tips

  • Clean up your CMS export before using Copilot — delete any blank rows or duplicate headers that appear at the top of exported reports
  • Ask Copilot to create charts: "Create a bar chart showing monthly filing trends for the last 6 months" — these paste directly into Word reports
  • You can save your Copilot questions as a template for next month: same questions, new data, same report format
