What This Does

Canva's Magic Write lets you create a professional, visually clear brochure explaining court procedures for self-represented litigants — without being a designer or a writer. The result is a document that looks official and is easy to read, instead of the plain text handouts most courts currently use.

Before You Start

  • Free Canva account at canva.com
  • The key procedural content for the case type (steps, fees, required forms)
  • Your court's name and logo if available (optional)

Steps

1. Log in and find a brochure template

  1. Go to canva.com and log in
  2. Click Create a design and search for "Brochure" or "Trifold"
  3. Select a clean, simple template — choose one with clear section areas and minimal decorative elements (avoid templates that look too corporate or flashy — you want professional and accessible)

2. Customize the template structure

  1. Keep the same number of panels as the template
  2. Change the header to your court's name
  3. Replace any stock photos with simple icons (search Canva's icon library for legal/document icons)

3. Use Magic Write to draft the content

  1. Click on a text box in the design
  2. Look for the Magic Write sparkle icon in the text toolbar
  3. Type your prompt: "Write a short explanation of how to file a small claims case for someone with no legal experience. Include: eligibility, how much you can claim, what forms to use, and what happens at the hearing. Under 100 words."
  4. Click Generate — Magic Write fills the text box

4. Repeat for each section

For a trifold brochure, use Magic Write to fill each panel:

  • Panel 1: "What is a small claims case?" (30-40 words)
  • Panel 2: "How to file — step by step" (numbered list, 5 steps)
  • Panel 3: "What to bring to your hearing" (bulleted list)
  • Panel 4: "Frequently asked questions" (3-4 Q&As)
  • Panel 5: Contact information placeholder
  • Panel 6: Court hours and location placeholder

5. Review all content

Read every panel carefully and correct any procedural inaccuracies. Remove any language that could be interpreted as legal advice. Have a supervisor review before printing.

6. Download and print

Real Example

Scenario: Pro se filers asking about eviction response procedures are taking 15 minutes each to explain. You want a brochure they can take home.

What you create: A trifold brochure explaining: what an unlawful detainer case is, how to file a response (forms, fees, deadline), what to expect at the hearing, and where to get additional help (self-help center, legal aid).

Result: Counter explanation time drops from 15 minutes to 3 — you hand them the brochure and highlight the relevant sections.

Tips

  • Save the design in Canva — next year when fees change, you just update the number and redownload; no redesign needed
  • Canva's free tier has limited brochure templates — if you don't like the options, search for "trifold document" for more variety
  • For translation: duplicate the design, then use a free AI tool (Claude, ChatGPT) to translate all the text panels and paste the translation back in — you can have a Spanish version in under 30 minutes
